Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 05, 2012

The Atlanta Accident and Disability Attorneys of Monge & Associates are taking part in the Legal Food Frenzy. The event is a statewide food and fund drive competition among Georgia law firms that will benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

The Atlanta personal injury attorneys at Monge & Associates will start the food drive at their office at 8205 Dunwoody Place, Building 19, on April 23. The drive continues through May 4.

The firm will be collecting nonperishable food items and competing with other Georgia law firms and legal organizations to collect the most food for the nonprofit food bank.

Right now in Georgia, there are more than 1.6 million people who need food assistance, according to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

“It is imperative that we give back to our community, especially in these hard economic times we are facing,” said Scott Monge, an Atlanta personal injury lawyer whose firm represents Atlanta accident victims and those in need of disability benefits.

“The lawyers and team members at Monge & Associates have their game faces on,” he said. “We’re ready for the challenge to collect as much food as possible.”

Each month, more than 1,000 volunteers work the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which was founded in 1979. The food bank distributes almost 2 million pounds of food and other donated grocery items every month to more than 800 nonprofit agencies in the Metro Atlanta and North Georgia counties.

Last year alone, the Atlanta Community Food Bank distributed 34 million pounds of food and products. The food items go to food pantries, community kitchens, childcare centers, night shelters and senior centers in the Atlanta area.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is committed to “fighting hunger by engaging, educating and empowering our community.”

The Atlanta Accident and Disability Attorneys of Monge & Associates are proud to contribute to such a phenomenal organization, and the firm is excited to continue its relationship with them, Monge said.

Dwight Global Leader Recognized by Congress

Dwight Global Leader Recognized by Congress

Dwight Global Leadership Academy graduate Nielsen Dias receives Congressional Medal for Service from Congressman Steve Stivers.

Vancouver Island, Canada (PRWEB) March 29, 2012

The Dwight Global Leaders Academy (http://www.dwightleadershipacademy.org), a unique leadership-building program developed as part of the Dwight Family of Schools, is proud to announce that Dwight Global Leader Nielsen Dias was awarded two Congressional Medals in recognition for his commitment to volunteerism. The award recognizes service, initiative and achievements of young people ages 14 to 23 and is presented through the Congressional Award Foundation, a public-private partnership, in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.

Nielsen, 19, is a graduate of the Dwight Global leaders program. Presenting Nielsen with this honor was U.S. Congressman Steve Stivers, who was able to meet with the young service leader in person.

“Nielsen is a fantastic example of how the Dwight Global Leaders Academy teaches young people skills and values that they then take back into the world,” said Graham Brown, President of the Dwight Global Leaders Academy. “We’re fortunate to have had many young people like Neilsen go through the academy and it’s a source of tremendous pride when we see the great work they’re doing, and the fact that they’re getting recognized for that work.”

This past summer, Nielsen attended the Dwight Global Leaders Academy at the Dwight International School in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia, Canada. The Dwight Global Leaders Academy is a two week intensive program that trains young people to identify their unique talents, or “spark of genius” and develop a plan to leverage their abilities to help make the world a better place. As part of the program, participants conceptualize, develop and implement their own charitable programs. Graduates of the academy go on to attend some of the most prestigious universities in the world, including Stanford, Harvard, Dartmouth, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of British Columbia, MIT, Yale and Edinburgh.

Nielsen received a scholarship to attend the program by the Alcoa Foundation, whose mission is to build innovative partnerships with groups to educate tomorrow’s leaders in areas of service and sustainability.

“Above all else I would like to thank Alcoa for even giving me the opportunity to attend such a prestigious academy,” Nielsen said. “The Dwight Global Leaders Academy gave me the extra confidence and skill set to go out and achieve my goals of changing the world little by little. The countless experiences I learned at the academy will stay with me for the rest of my life and will serve as my guides towards my future.”

A longtime volunteer in his hometown of Miami, Florida, Nielsen has worked for the Ronald McDonald House, Cyder Reading for the Blind and Starbucks Youth Philanthropy Committee. Nielsen is currently a “Fisher Cares” volunteer and a “Scholars for Service” award recipient. He tutors students at the Windsor School, serves meals to homeless at Holy Family Soup Kitchen and he packages food at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank for distribution.

Westtown Middle School Shakespeare Festival: O Brave New World!

Westtown Middle School Shakespeare Festival: O Brave New World!

A saucy exchange in “Taming of the Shrew”

Westtown, PA (PRWEB) March 16, 2012

Beginning February 27, Westtown Middle School morphed into “Shakespeare Central.” Regular classes gave way for an entire week to a series of specialized workshops on the Bard and the Elizabethan era. Shakespeare would have been in his element as students traveled by horseback, worked in guilds making stained glass, constructed working siege engines and cut pretty capers in Elizabethan dances. But blogs? Tweets? Fakebook pages? LOL, Will Shakespeare!

Utilizing social media was just one of the ways teachers brought relevance to the topic as they made Shakespeare come alive for middle school students of the 21st century at Westtown, a pre-K – 12 college prep school in West Chester, PA. Workshops on calligraphy, Elizabethan games and sports (“what Shakespeare did when he wasn’t busy writing”), and food made learning fun.

Westtown Middle School teacher Lisa Cromley said, “Students feasted on food from Shakepeare’s kitchen. They loved the idea of those elaborate Elizabethan food spectacles: marzipan sculptures, purple rice balls, green bread, and fish (of the Swedish candy variety) swimming in aspic, which for us was Jello.”

Another Westtown teacher, Megan Rose, said the active, engaged and integrated learning that took place in the Shakespeare Festival mirrors real life. Students not only read about transportation in the time of Shakespeare; they also learned to ride horses and care for them. The line from “Macbeth,” “Something wicked this way comes,” took on new meaning as they learned about people of a pre-scientific world who saw witchcraft and the supernatural as explanations for life’s mysteries.

Young people learned new skills during the Shakespeare Festival. Making paper, sewing banners with heraldic designs, dancing courtly dances, painting murals, juggling and learning to parry with swords were but a few of them. And throughout it all, students in the “London Herald” blogged, tweeted, filmed and photographed, creating their own annals of the Festival.

Students also performed condensed versions of three of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays. Each grade collaborated as they helped build the set, hang lights, build props, design costumes, apply makeup, and rehearse – for two months – to breathe life into these 500+ year old plays. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Twelfth Night,” and “Taming of the Shrew” were staged by the young Westtown thespians.

“Hearing students quoting lines from the plays as they walked down the halls made my day,” said Judy Asselin, director of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the 6th grade play. “These powerful lines will be with them for the rest of their lives.”
